Cost of Living Adjustment
Do Social Security Disability benefits adjust for cost of living increases?
When the cost of living rises, your Social Security Disability payments or Supplemental Security Income will rise also. Every year, the Social Security Administration will evaluate the consumer price index and determine if there will be a cost of living adjustment, also known as COLA. For the years 2009 through 2011, there was no COLA for those who received disability payments. Thankfully an increase in COLA was made for 2012 in order to ease the burdens caused by rising costs.
Here at Disability Action Advocates, our Social Security disability lawyers understand the challenges you might be facing in an effort to make ends meet. Our country has seen record increases in gas prices that are sending prices up in many other arenas as well. Cost of living adjustments are made based on certain indicators that are evaluated the third quarter of each year. If it is determined that another COLA is due this year, it will be announced in October. Based on current projections, it has been predicted that there will be one.
